Saturday Morning Weekend Predictions – 09 April ’16

Orlando Pirates vs Free State Stars

Orlando Pirates take on Free State Stars in what you can call a midtable clash since both eEa Lla Koto and Amabhakabhaka are sitting on 7th and 8th spots. With the same amount of points.

This has been a hot and cold season for Pirates but in Orlando, excuse me, if I may, use my Hip-Hop jargon “dey get turnt!”

Prediction 2-0 to Ezimnyama Ngenkani

 West Ham vs Arsenal

I know you’ve heard the term so many times that I’m sure you have started thinking to yourself which game isn’t a must-win.

This one though is truly one of those must-win games for both teams.

Arsenal is pursuing the English premier league and West Ham United is gunning for the champions league spots.

Arsenal has only lost one out of the last 8 fixtures against West Ham, but that West Ham team didn’t have Dimitri Payet.

But I still see an Arsenal win though.

Prediction 1-2 to the Arsenal

Sunderland vs Leicester City

Big Sam and his troops welcome Sunderland to the Stadium of Light.

Sam Allardyce is known to set up his team in a stubborn, parsimonious, non-Barcelona way, which works well for him.

Don’t get me wrong, it is terrible to watch but like I said its wooooorks for him.

This game may not be as simple as some pundits may make it out to be, then again, it can, but it all depends on who scores the first goal and my money is on Sunderland.

A goal from a set piece, or a goal from Jermain Defoe, or Jermain Defoe taking a set piece goal.

Either way, the goal has to come from Jermain Defoe.

Prediction 1-0 to the Black Cats!

Tottenham vs Man United

Tottenham Hotspur needs this win much more than Manchester United do. And therefore, this match will end in a draw.

Prediction 1-1

Southampton vs Newcastle

Mike Ashley, Rafa Benitez, and anybody with Geordie accent needs a win. And they need a win badly.

Hey here is a stupid stat, Newcastle have lost their last eight away league games – their worst run since 1977

They are worse than when Kevin Nolan and the one legged Michael Owen were still around!

Anyway, at least,  Rafa Benitez relegation clause is still in place.

Prediction 2-0 to Southampton (6 games to go, Rafa!)

Real Sociedad vs Barcelona

Barcelona has a 10 game losing streak against Real Sociedad.

Okay so it’s only 6, it’s only 6 games they haven’t won against Real Sociedad. Excuse me for exaggerating a little.

In January, The Basques beat Barcelona 1-0 under David Moyes (who has since vanished off the face of the earth).

Barcelona had a bruising match against rivals Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their champions league quarter-final last Tuesday.

They may be looking to rest a few battered bodies this weekend before their next battle on Wednesday against Atletico.

Real Sociedad will be wanting to continue their impressive run of results against the Catalans.

Prediction 2-2

Milan vs Juventus

Milan coach Sinisa Mihajlovic is a man with a target on his back.

A loss to Juventus this weekend could spell the end for the Serbian.

In the devastating form that Juventus are in, having won 13 out of 14 league games in 2016, scoring 28 goals and conceding only two…

Prediction 0-3 Juve

Crystal Palace vs Norwich City
Prediction 2-2

Espanyol vs Atlético Madrid

Saturday Afternoon Weekend Predictions 19 March ’16

Crystal Palace v Leicester City

Crystal Palace is the worst team in the division (worst team in all four divisions to be exact). They are horrible. No, really, they are crappy. Even though Leicester City have been scrapping out results they are still winning games. It would be hard for me to pick Crystal Palace in this one.

Final Score: 0-1

Everton v Arsenal

Our beloved Arsenal (I’m being sarcastic) are trailing Leicester City by 11 points. They are coming off an awful but somewhat predictable loss to Barcelona during the week. Everton, on the other hand,  is coming off a handy win against Guus’ Chelsea. Both Kevin Mirrialas and Gareth Barry are suspended for this tie plus Everton have been conceding a lot of goals this season.

Final score: 2-2

Chelsea v West Ham

Chelsea has nothing else to play for. Usually, when teams get to this point, they feel the sudden urge to spite other teams. Eden hazard is out with a hip problem and Diego Costa is suspended.

Final Score: 1-1

Newcastle v Sunderland

This is the most important game of the weekend.  No, really it is. Rafael Benitez’ team are sitting at the bottom of the league table (Aston Villa doesn’t count). This is what they call a 6-pointer. Jermain Defoe is back after a slight injury and they need him.

Final Score: 2-1

Man. City v Man United

In another irrelevant game of the weekend but simply finds its self on this list because… I actually don’t know why it finds its self on this list. Vincent Kompany is out for a long (I’m assuming). LvG and Manchester United hope not to get embarrassed again by a mediocre Liverpool side. After that drab of a Champions League match, let’s hope this one is more entertaining.

Final Score: 2-2

Tottenham v Bournemouth

After Dortmund ripped them to pieces in their Europa Cup match Tottenham is back to focusing on the league (excuses). Harry Kane is back after his rest during the week. Bournemouth looks set on keeping up their good premier league run of fixtures. But anyway, I see Tottenham winning here.

Final Score: 2-0

Sporting v Atlético Madrid

Final score: 0-3

In other less amusing but interesting enough to watch matches:

Villarreal v Barcelona

Final Score: 0-3

Real Madrid v Sevilla

Final Score: 2-1

Napoli v Genoa

Final Score: 2-0

Torino v Juventus

Final Score: 0-2

Golden Arrows v SuperSport United

Final Score: 2-2

Platinum Stars v Black Aces

Final Score: 2-3

Top 10 Football Stories of the Week (14 March ‘16 – 18 March ’16)

  1. Komphela goes into hidingSteve+Komphela+

After losing four games on the trot Steve Komphela reassured us that there is no crisis at Kaizer Chiefs.

“You could only say it was a crisis if we were not creating chances and playing badly. But it is just the opposite.”

“We play a clear game, we build, we develop but finishing is a question mark. A lot of stuff in our game is so positive but the cardinal error is not taking the chances we create,”

Komphela seems to be a glass half full type of guy.

2. The Arsenal get booted out of the UEFA Champions League (same old s**t, just a different day)

Even though we do expect this type of performance from Arsenal around this time of year, it doesn’t make it any less painful for the gooners. Danny Mills weighed in on the situation.

“Arsenal are only two players away from being a top side. A magnificent centre-forward who can get 25+ goals and a world-class centre-back.

“They have enough midfield players. They have £150m-£200m in the bank but only need to bring in two more players.

“Going forward, Arsenal have looked good but defensively they have looked fragile, that has been the case for years. Sol Campbell, Martin Keown and Ashley Cole have never been replaced.

3. Mbalula refutes allegations.

Fikile Mbalua says he did not take ‘da money’.

“It has inflicted reputational damage of monumental proportions on this country. The ideas propounded by both the local and international press are loaded with dangerous insinuations,”

“South Africa refuses to drown itself in the blame-victim mentality game. The FBI indictment and Fifa-orchestrated investigations are littered with explosive contradictions.”

Fikile Mbalula better have a good defense lawyer.

4. Leslie Sedibe ‘confused’

Banned former SAFA CEO Leslie Sedibe claims that this is a conspiracy!

“They [Fifa] are crazy… I can assure you that I’m not going to waste my children’s money. Let them sue me… I will meet Fifa in court and I will clear my name. One thing I really relish is to have them under cross examination.”’

“A lot of people look at these things as glamorous‚ but I must tell you it was hard. It was hard to run an organisation that was bankrupt.”

“I’m not surprised. They were looking for a fall guy and hey‚ Leslie Sedibe is the fall guy.”

5. LvG fails at being a good manager… again.

Manchester United have won 5 of their last 26 games. That’s 5 wins from their last 26 games. Only 5. As usual, LvG had plenty of excuses.

“It is very disappointing because we had the chance – that’s the feeling in the dressing room. We created enough chances Lingard missed with his head, Mata from eight metres, Martial also, but the way we conceded that goal, in the last seconds of the first half”

the ramble continued…

“If we didn’t concede that goal, it was possible. In the second half, we also had chances Fellaini with his head, with his foot. But you have to score three goals and that’s not too easy.”

6. Neville sent to the stands, Valencia lose.

Gary Neville got sent to the stands after a controversial late goal from Aduriz. After the match, Gary seemed resigned to his fate.

“I’m only thinking about the nine games. That’s all I want to think about. That’s all I should think about,”

“I was hired for five months. That has always been the agreement.”

“I’m not closing the door but we all know the contract that I was given. I will make sure that I give everything. I have come to love this club and to love the city. I have never seen such passionate fans; they are a proud bunch and I just imagine what they would be like if the results were better.”

Something gives me a feeling that Gary Neville wants to get out of there.

7. Tottenham get hammered by Dortmund. Tottenham now turn focus on the league.

Tottenham had two below-par performances against Dortmund first losing 3-0 in Germany and then losing 1-2 in England. Mauricio Pochettino now believes that with all the distractions out the way Tottenham can now focus on the league.

“We are a period now, after eight months, where we start to compete.”

“We have eight games left in the Premier League, we need to try to win every game.”

“We need to start on Sunday. It will be a tough game but we are in a position where we can fight for everything, and we need to try.”

8. Danny Drinkwater gets a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s squad

during the Barclays Premier League match between Leicester City and Newcastle United at The King Power Stadium on March 14, 2016 in Leicester, England.

Danny Drinkwater who has been a stalwart in the league topping Leicester City side finally gets a called-up to the England squad. Ranieri had nothing but praise for the midfielder.

“I am pleased and all his team-mates are pleased,”

“It’s good because that means we are working well. And he deserves it because during all the season he’s playing very well, very solid, good quality. Now he also starts to score goals.”

9. Dimitri Payet and N’golo Kante have also have been called up to the French team.

Didier Deschamps believes both players have been brought into the squad of merit. Deschamps considers N’golo Kante one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

“He’s a complete midfielder,”

“He has a great approach to recovering the ball – to sense the path of it and to position himself well.”

“But he doesn’t just do that. He has the energy to play what they call in England a box-to-box role. He’s capable of taking part in attacks too.”

Naming Dimitri Payet for the French squad wasn’t an easy decision for him make but he made a decision based on which player is on form currently.

“I have difficult choices to make,”

“If I hadn’t selected Dimitri Payet today it would have been for other reasons than his sporting performances.”

“And because I don’t have other reasons, I’ve stuck with my sporting reasoning in relation to what he’s doing with his club.

“It seems, to my eyes, completely logical that he might return to us for these two matches.”

10. Benzema still not welcomed back in France squad

After Karim Benzema reportedly blackmailed team Mathieu Valbuena over a sex-tape. Benzema hasn’t been allowed back into the France squad.

Benzema’s lawyer has previously protested his innocence, saying: “He played no part, I repeat no part, in any blackmail or attempted blackmail,”

The prime minister, Manuel Valls, said; “The conditions for Karim Benzema to return to the France team have not been met at the moment.

“He is still under investigation. At the same time, though, it is the decision of the French Football Federation.”
