The El Clasico is this weekend and I’d be lying if I said I was hyped. Without Ronaldo and Messi is this game is going to be a snoozefest?
Barcelona host Real Madrid at the Camp Nou on Sunday in the 272nd El Clasico.
This would have been the part of this post where I’d show you my excitement by the number of unnecessary exclamation marks I put after every sentence.
But, unfortunately, I ‘m not as thrilled as I usually am.
Both teams will be without Ronaldo and Messi respectively
Cristiano Ronaldo decided to take his, talents, his model wife, and his immaculately gelled hair to Italy. The Portuguese with perfect teeth surprised the world when he signed for Juventus in July.
Lionel Messi, on the other hand (excuse the pun), fractured his arm in the 16th minute of Barcelona’s eventual 4-2 win over Sevilla last weekend.
That was a sad day in my household to see a near-perfect human-being snap his elbow like a Kit-Kat. I couldn’t eat for 5 days thinking about it.
You’d have to borrow Marty McFly 85′ DeLorean to go back in time 11 years to find the last El Clasico which featured neither Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.
The two players who are known to be the best that have ever done it won’t be playing. That fact alone dulls the flavour of the fixture.
Lionel Messi has scored 26 goals in 38 and Cristiano Ronaldo 18 goals in 30 El Clasico fixtures.
Who is going to score those goals? Karim Benzema?:
Both teams have been underwhelming this season
Barcelona are on top the La Liga standings but they have been hardly the Barcelona we have come to expect, enjoy and bet our children university tuition fees on.
Barca have performed poorly. They have only won five of their nine games and failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six matches games across all competitions.
Real Madrid have been worse. They seem lost without Ronaldo. Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema aren’t as good as we thought they would be without the ball-hogging Ronaldo.
We will have to wait and see who of the 22 players will stand up and be counted. Until then, Sunday night’s game will share my viewing time with SA Idols and Instagram stories.
